Classic Movie Review: "The Gay Divorcee"

by charlotte kuchinsky

It seems that I have re-fallen in love with classic movies. I would almost prefer watching them to a lot of the garbage that Hollywood puts out today.

That's not to say that today's movies are all bad. They most assuredly are not. However, few of them have the same dapth and substance of some of the yesteryear.

I recently agreed to watch "The Gay Divorcee" with my husband. It was Fred Astaire's and Ginger Roger's first motion picture as a couple. They went on to make 18 more together.

As much as I love dancing shows today, I haven't in the past enjoyed a lot of Hollywood musicles; especially those chock full of dance like this one.

Cultural Motives in the Gay Marriage Argument

by Albert Bales

Homophobia is Not the Core Issue

Cultural change is a constant process of accommodation and adaptation to developing social conditions which are sometimes seamlessly assimilated with scarce notice and sometimes accepted only after serious conflagrations up to and including war. When proposition 8, the measure banning gay marriage, was passed by a 59 percent vote last November the decision unleashed a militant backlash by gays and their supporters that has prompted a judicial review now gestating in the california State Supreme court. The passage of the initiative was a surprise to the gay community who, by and large, felt that they had broad support for their cause. Discrimination was at an all time low, gay politicians were well accepted in the state and local legislatures, there are many popular gay media figures.

"Sports Out Loud" The Best Gay Sports Magazine in the World?

by Joe Jewett

Aiming to fill the void of gay sports press in the marketplace, the magazine "Sports Out Loud" has hit newsstands. But, have the publishers hit a home run or is it a foul ball in the dirt?

When I first got my hands on Issue #1, I'll be honest, I was kind of disappointed. Turns out the first installment of 'SOL' (an unfortunate set of initials), is a swimsuit issue. So my first instinct was to take this magazine as anything but serious....a disappointment for a publication that not-so-modestly bills itself as " the best gay sports magazine in the world." But as the saying goes, you cannot judge a book or, by extension, a magazine by its cover. So on we go.

"Sports Out Loud" shows itself to be a fairly light magazine in terms of story volume. At only fifty pages, with 25% of that taken up by swimsuit photos, I would have hoped for more in terms of content. But what is presented here is fairly good.

Minsk Gay Guide: Gay Life in Belarus

by Bartleby

Belarusians Below the Radar..

Among the former Soviet states in Eastern Europe, Belarus is the most resistant to social change, restricting gay life to private connections out of the public eye. Homosexual behavior was decriminalized in the early 1990s, but pervasive homophobia has largely squelched the gay rights movement. Neighbors of Belarus like Russia, Poland, and Lithuania enjoy far more advanced, even if fledgling, gay life.

Minsk, the capital of Belarus, provides a tenuous, semi-safe haven for gays through an underground network of private organizations and rotating gay nights at bars and clubs.

Family Matters: Gay and Lesbian Adoption

by Diana Hechavarria

The issue of allowing gay and lesbian couples to adopt children has been one of much debate, particularly in my state of Florida. From a sociological perspective, widespread homophobia is the leading cause of many denouncing same sex adoption. The idea of a traditional nuclear family is one of the biggest obstacles homosexual couples encounter when facing the issue parenting. Gay men and lesbians are often viewed as excluded from having children because sexual reproduction is related to heterosexual couples only.Additionally, viewing homosexuality as a condition, we label homosexuals as deviant, therefore classifying them as unfit parents. Understanding the institution of the family is changing, we need to accept homosexuals are capable parents, and they do not produce dysfunctional behavior in children, nor detrimentally affect their well being. Research supports that there is no apparent difference in the mental health of children raised by homosexuals. "The quality of parenting, not the parent's sexual orientation, it the primary factor in a child's healthy development" (Savage 2001:A13).
